Ennis, Montana - August 11-14

We really enjoyed Madison Meadows Golf Course in Ennis.  The course has a pretty interesting layout.  But, what is even more interesting are all the pronghorn around the course.  As you can see they are not very frightened of golfers.

They were very accommodating and even posed for a photo with Mark!!

We are truly enjoying lots of unique restaurants in Montana.  We had to go to Alley's bistro.  It is named Ally's because it was part of a bowling alley.  We enjoyed some interesting appetizers: smoked salmon (almost finished it before I could get a photo) encrusted brie, and shrimp-car-got.  We topped it off with a fresh peach gallette.  Yum!!

Virginia City, Montana is a "turn of the century" type town.  We spent the better part of a day enjoying some of the interesting things this town has to offer.  We started with The Virginia City Players.  The show started with a Chaplin Silent Movie,  then a melodrama, followed by a Vaudville Review.

We went back to the coach for a short break and to catch up on the PGA golf tournament.  Then back to Virginia City for dinner at Wells Fargo Steak House followed by the Brewery Follies.  The top photo shows the cover they put over the table cloth that has an charcoal sketch of the front of the Wells Fargo Office.  The bottom is the actual building where we ate dinner.  It was a long day but we enjoyed it!!

It's our last full day in Ennis so we have to make the most of it.  We started with lunch at Yesterday's Soda Fountain and Restaurant.  We had a great Montana Sandwich (surprisingly it was turkey with avocado, spouts, lettuce and tomato), and a great corn chowder.  But, the best was an amazing dutch apple pie ala mode!!

We couldn't stop in Ennis and not take a ride down to Wade and Cliff Lake.  They are beautiful clear lakes with Caribbean like blue green water.  First we had to cross the Madison River.  As we drove beside the river all we saw were trout fisherman in waders or in row boats.  They say this is the best trout fishing in the USA!

We were blown away by the amazing amounts of hay bales.  We're not talking little rolls, but big rolls and hundreds of them laying side by side in the field just after they have been plowed.  What is even more amazing is the field after field of cattle.  As we drove down to the lake Mark had a one on one discussion with one of them!!

But then when you reach the lake you can't believe that a lake in Montana can have such beautiful water!!

And it is crystal clear!!

They are beautiful lakes with no motors allowed so there are generally lots of kayakers and paddle boarders who enjoy these still waters.

We then took a quick ride over to next door Cliff Lake.  It too is beautiful and much larger than Wade Lake.  What beauty.

As we headed home we passed two of the peaks Mark had wanted to hike: The Helmet and the Sphinx.  Not enough time this trip, maybe next time!

But there is still one more stop on our bucket list: a tasting at Willie's Distillery.  They give you one ounce shots of your choice of: Montana Moonshine, Montana Honey Moonshine, Bighorn Bourbon Whiskey, Willie's
Canadian Whiskey, Willie's Huckleberry Sweet Cream Liqueur or Willie's Coffee Cream Liqueur.  We opted for a flight of five and ended up purchasing the two Liqueurs.  Yes, I finished the Huckleberry before the photo.

Yes, I was talking about all the cattle.  Here is a view from afar to give you an idea of how large the herds are.

And what better way to know that we had a perfect visit to Ennis, Montana than a beautiful rainbow.

Now its on to Pocatello, Idaho.  And we will be there in the path of the Solar Eclipse!!
