Michigan Part 2 Macinac Island

Definitely needed to check Macinac Island off my bucket list!!!  To get there you have to take a ferry.  But, we decided to cross the Macinac Bridge and take the ferry from St. Ignace.

This bridge is five miles long!!  What is more amazing to me is that as you cross the bridge and look toward the East you see Lake Huron and toward the West you see Lake Michigan.  This is the view from Lake Huron from the Ferry on the way to the island.

As we approach the Island we are greated by the landmark that made the Island so famous, The Grand Hotel.  This hotel is best known for being featured in the Christopher Reeves, Jane Seymour, film "Somewhere in Time."

We took our bikes with us on the ferry as no motor vehicles are allowed on the island.  Here is a typical view of Main Street.  It is at the rare time when you don't see a horse drawn carriage on the street.

Our first priority was to bike the 8 mile road, the only State highway where cars are banned, that navigates the full rim of the island.

We passed this family taking a dip in the beautiful clear lake water.

What a wonderful surprise to take in this view of  the most beautiful clear lake water that we have ever seen.

It was not warm enough for me to go into the water but we had to get off the bikes and venture down to the waters edge to dip our hands in Lake Huron.

We finished the eight miles and headed out to explore the island.  We stopped by water's edge and had a "Michigan Salad."  We road around the city streets and the K-8th public school for the 80-90 children of the 500 year round residents.  We ended our ride for an close-up view of the Grand Hotel.

After a great day on the island its time to board the ferry.  From our vantage point on the ferry we had a great view of the island with  kites flying overhead ...

...as well as a view of cyclists on the 8 mile highway bike route.

We were so close to Canada we took the international bridge into Sault Ste Marie (pronounced Soo Saint Marie) that actually crosses a portion of the St Lawrence Seaway.

A great trip and a wonderful day.  Its time to get back on the road and head off to our next stop,  JR Wells State Park in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
