Why do they call it Little Bear? Here is a close up of the outline of the Bear at the peak of this mountain!
We were actually too early for Fall Colors but we had some magnificent scenery to watch as we rolled down the rails.
And we also saw the remnants of a derailed train.
We truly loved relaxing in the lounge car with a hot cup of coffee. For most of the trip we had this car all to ourselves!!
It gets even better when we get called for our lunch reservation in the dining car!!
Mark had the Scallops and I had the Trout and we chose to enjoy our Pumpkin Pie dessert back in the lounge car!!
We made a stop at the Fir Summit and we got this amazing "we were there photo" of us with our train coming right behind us!!
You can't visit Alamosa and not make a stop at Great Sand Dunes National Park.
These huge dunes, North America's tallest, eroded from mountains, then shattered by freezing and thawing, and tumbled by streams and winds. Much of the sand comes from the San Juan Mountains, over 65 miles to the west. Larger grains and pebbles come from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
It was a very windy day but we managed to hike through lots of sand and get this video that gives you a 360 degree view of the dunes and where they are situated. Star Dune, the tallest dune in the park is 755 feet.
Talk about crazy weather, as we pulled out of the parking lot, we experienced hail!!
Next stop: Angel Fire, New Mexico.
