May- June 13, 2011 - Arizona to Ohio and Pennsylvania

The 2010/2011 Seeing America Tour is traveling the North Eastern US.  We hightailed it from Arizona to Pittsburg, Kansas about 1200 miles with only a one nights stop in New Mexico!  Pittsburg, KS was a stop over to see Mark's family.  The rest of the month of May was mostly a short stopover in our old home town at a campground near Lake Lotawana, MO.

While in Missouri we had to take the RV in for a coolant clutch fan and had some time to kill while they had the coach so we tried to go play the new Greg Norman golf course but it was fully booked.

Driving by Kauffman Stadium we noticed the Royals were playing.  The parking gates were open so we drove right in and got a parking space in the second row.  People walking out gave us their tickets so we walked in with the score at 0-0 at the top of the 7th.  We got great seats, enjoyed the new Jumbo Tron and watched Billy Butler hit a bottom of the 9th walk off home run to win the game 2-0.  Fantastic game and we didn't spend 1 cent.  What a great detour!!

Next stop was Carlyle, IL.  We played a beautiful golf course at Govener's Run but the bugs ruined the day - but worth trying again.

Onward to Galloway, Ohio.  We pulled into the RV park and lo and behold, miracles never cease! Parked across from us were our friend, Lou and Marge whom we met in Templeview RV Park in St. George, Utah 2 years ago!  They are very familiar with the area and they took us on a wonderful tour of Columbus.

Hands down, the highlight of the tour was this stop at Schmidt's Restaurant.  We all enjoyed the fabulous buffet of typical german foods.  We just had to take the touristy photos.

While in Ohio, we took advantage of going to the PGA Memorial Golf Tournament.  We walked almost the entire golf course and as usual enjoyed seeing Murfield Village, a golf course we will never be able to play on, and watch the pros play this silly game.

We then headed out to Meadville, PA, proud home of Allegheny College where my son spent a good part of of his undergraduate career.  Nate, I know you did't spend most of your time on campus, but this one is for you!

Mark has never been to this area so we had to go to the Linesville spillway "where the ducks walk on the fish" on Pymatuning Lake.  You can bring your own bread or they sell bread there. The fish and the ducks fight for each morsel.

For those who can get past the uniquely ugly look of these fish here is a video of what it looks like when you throw in the bread. It is quite a site!  If you are really adventurous, click on the box in the bottom right to get the full screen version.

We took the short trip to Titusville to visit the Drake Well, the first well to strike oil in the US in August of 1859 launching the modern petroleum industry.  This is the engine house which is on the site of the well and a replica of the wood fired boiler and steam engine used to drill and pump oil until 1861.

In my favorite category of journey photos comes this one.  You just have to love the creativity of the PA Dept of Transportation and what they can do with road signs!

One of the courses we played during this stop was Whispering Pines.  The weather was in the 70's with a nice cool breeze and the air actually smelled sweet.  It was a wonderful day and we birdied this hole!

On the recommendation of the campground owner we stopped by this restaurant for dinner.  The owner is a huge big game hunter!  I wish one of us was in front of the polar bear shot so you could get a sense of perspective.  It is huge!

Next stop...Akron, NY and hopefully a visit to Niagra Falls.

What a great adventure - especially the baseball game. Wish you could have swung (swing, swang, swung?) South into North Georgia. Love to see you guys!! Great pictures and makes us want to try your trip on our way West at the end of the year.....
But we must be in San Antonio the week following Thanksgiving, so I doubt that we will do it in 2011. You are great inspirations, though, and it is a pleasure to be with you at least in spirit! Happy Trails,
Tom, Ann, & Bocce
