In order to control congestion in the park, Scenic Drive, the road that runs through the park, is closed to private vehicles. Zion has an amazing propane fueled transportation system that runs the length of Scenic Drive, with a connecting system that picked us up at a stop right outside the campground. However, you can travel by private vehicle on Highway 9. The combination of the rustic red road and the imposing buttes and towering craigs create a grand introduction to the palate of Zion.
Our first hike, although not really a hike more like a stroll, was down the easy 2 mile paved Riverside trail. But, even though it is very easy, the views from the bottom of the canyon beside the Virgin River are something you don't want to miss!
The paved trail ends at the River where the park's most spectaular river hike, The Narrows, begins. You can sense Mark's disappointment because The Narrows was closed to hikers due to the strength of the current. It generally does not open until late May or June when the snow has melted and the current is not as swift. Someday we will return to do The Narrows River Hike.
Our next hike was to see the Lower, Middle and Upper Pools along Emerald Pools trail. As we started up the trail we enjoyed some beautiful views of the trails and the river below. At the lower pools the trail takes you directly below one of the small falls. But the real work out is the rock filled trail to the upper pool. We were too busy navigating the rocks to take any photos!
After a good workout climbing the rocky path, I take off my pack to enjoy a much deserved Strawberry Mango frozen yogurt cone outside of Zion Lodge!
On our last day at Zion we hopped on our bikes at the campground and rode into the park and onto the Pa'rus trail which follows the Virgin River all the way to Canyon Junction. Aside from my slipping into the river when crossing a small ravine on foot to get a better view, this was a great way to enjoy the park.
We are not sure exactly what it was but Zion brings about a strong sense of serenity. Throughout our stay Mark kept saying "serenity now." I can't think of a better two words to describe the feeling of Zion National Park.
Next stop, St. George, Utah. But, before I start this I need to post the Snow Mass, Colorado vacation stop.
