We enjoyed a beautiful drive from Vermont to Maine traveling through New Hampshire and the White Mountains with many stands of white birch trees. We went though tunnels of trees that were denser than the famous "Tunnel of Trees" in Michigan! Our first stop in Maine was a visit to our friends Katherine and Alan Souza who recently built a "camp" (as they call it) on lake Keoka in Waterford. You can't use a GPS to get to their home. You just keep taking the right fork on the little dirt road and you finally see some sign of life!
There is even a very serene tree lined path from the "camp" to the dock. The years of fallen leaves and natural decomposition have created a carpeted path that is so soft it compresses as you walk!
They just bought a new jet boat!!! Katherine and their newest addition, a lab mix name Sydney, took me in the little boat for a ride across the lake. The guys went to play golf at the local course and the girls checked out Waterford and some of Katherine's childhood memories.
We docked across the lake at Katherine's girlhood friend's house. They have a girls night out every Wednesday!!! The Lake House was quite the place in its day. Katherine told me that Judy Garland and Andy Rooney went there by carriage. Katherine's grandmother worked in the quaint stone fronted library and Katherine shared with me her memories of spending lots of time there. We took a relaxing stop at their private beach and then headed back.
We even made a stop at her brother's home, complete with an antique wood burning stove!! This is where Katherine spent her childhood summers. No wonder she and Alan built a summer home here!
The guys got back fromt the golf course and we all headed out to the jet boat for a cruise around the lake with cheese, crackers and some happy hour beverages!! This is quite the life!!!
To cap off a perfect day, Katherine made a scrumptious Maine dinner: Lobster, fresh Maine Corn and Fresh Maine Potatoes. Sydney found the live lobsters scurrying across the floor just fascinating. Katherine loved our Vermont wine: Snow White - a princess for a princess.
A big thank you for the wonderful first stop in Maine to Katherine, Alan and Sydney. Now we are off to Acadia National Park.
